Staffordshire Students Return from Trip of a Lifetime

31 October 2017

The ten winning students for the New Beacon Group’s, Beaconwood International Education Programme have returned from their once in a lifetime trip to China.

The students arrived back at Manchester airport on Monday 30th October after their 10-day adventure to Beijing and Chengdu.

The students had an amazing time in China, with Mohamed Daghem of Blessed William Howard School in Stafford saying, “It has truly been the best experience of my life, one I will never forget”.

Sophie Thomas a student at Weston Road Academy, said: “Thank you to all at the New Beacon Group for the amazing opportunity, I have had the best time ever and loved every moment”.

During the visit the students visited Beijing to see Tiananmen Square and the Great Wall of China, they then flew to Chengdu to the Panda Breeding Centre.

There were so many highlights of the trip, everyday students experienced a new sight, sound, smell – but if they had to choose, setting foot on the Great Wall of China, visiting the Pandas and talking to Chinese people were moments they will never forget.

The purpose of the visit to China was to launch the Beaconwood International Education Programme, an exchange programme which will see Chinese students coming to Stafford and English students visiting China.

China is an amazing country, Beijing is a very metropolitan city, with 23 million residents. Students get a real chance to see every day China when they went to the city of Leshan in Sichuan Province to visit the giant Buddha – a 71-meter stall statue carved out of the rockface. After viewing the Buddha, students got to walk around the market area and saw residents, playing mah-jong, young children practising Chinese calligraphy and market stalls brimming with spices for sale including Sichuan peppercorns. Experiencing real China was such an amazing and important part of the trip.

Another highlight had to be the Face Changing performance at the Shu Feng Ya Yun Sichuan Opera House, in Chengdu. A magical experience.

The students now they have returned to school are busy writing articles about their visit, to be part of an exhibition on the visit in Stafford. Rebecca Bostock, Head of Business Development for New Beacon Group, who accompanied the students said; “The trip was just wonderful. Alongside visiting world-famous landmarks, students had an opportunity to see every day China. The students really enjoyed meeting Chinese students during the two school visits and talking to them about what their life is like in China. Everywhere we went we were warmly welcomed, it truly was a once in a lifetime experience.!!”

Dr Kai Liu, CEO of New Beacon Group welcomed the students back stating, “You have all been a wonderful ambassador for Staffordshire and the United Kingdom”.
