Following the appointment of its founding President, Professor Richard Li-Hua, and an institutional restructure geared towards establishing New Beacon as a global university of the future, NBG launched the first of a number of new academic schools on 22nd May 2019. Representatives from education, business, local government and professional accreditation bodies attended the launch event to hear how NBG was set to shine as a beacon of innovation and entrepreneurship.

Leading the Beacon Business School is the recently appointed Dean of School, Professor James O’Kane who brings a wealth of leadership experience, a passion and a vision to develop and grow the Beacon Business School into a global School offering a wide spectrum of innovative, contemporary business programmes underpinned by high-quality scholarship and research.

As well as creating a unique student experience as part of NBG’s vision to become an attractive alternative education provider, Beacon Business School has ambitious aims to build upon NBG’s reputation for East and West management theories and practices, to provide the next generation of business leaders with the confidence, resilience, emotional intelligence and skills needed to make a difference to individuals, communities and society.

The launch event was preceded by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between New Beacon Group and Staffordshire University as a demonstration of their joint commitment to build and sustain a learning community at Staffordshire University’s former Beaconside site through teaching, applied research and enterprise of the highest standard.

Professor Richard Li-Hua emphasised NBG’s commitment to extend the academic footprint at the renamed Stafford Education and Enterprise Park. Commenting how pleased he was to be working with Staffordshire University “for mutual benefit, building our global reputation and increasing our international visibility”, Professor Li-Hua also stated: “The launch of Beacon Business School is an important milestone for the creation of our globally-connected university.”

After expressing delight at how quickly the Beacon building had been transformed, Staffordshire University’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Liz Barnes, talked about the two institutions being closely aligned in mission and values around transforming lives through higher education.

Professor Barnes stated: “We look forward to exploring the global opportunities this collaboration could bring and to supporting the benefits that the new Business School will bring to Stafford, complementing the hundreds of health and social care students and staff we already have present in the town at Blackheath Lane.”

The Chief Executive of Stafford Borough Council, Tim Clegg commented that the launch of the Beacon Business School was “a hugely important day for the town and borough” as it was his belief that “excellent education is key to Stafford’s future economic prosperity.”

Professor O’Kane, the Dean of the Beacon Business School said: “NBG and I are passionate about the use of higher education to transform lives and we hope that the new School will be a catalyst to enable a wide range of local, regional and international learners to study, develop and grow as global leaders and managers. We actively embrace entrepreneurial and innovative approaches in teaching and learning and we strive to give every student a unique Beacon experience.”

Following the launch ceremony, Professor Li-Hua invited guests to accompany him on a tour of the new Beacon Business School and the wider facilities available at the campus which would enable NBG to continue to expand and grow its academic provision in the years ahead.
