In his former role as the Head of the Business School at Staffordshire University, he provided strategic leadership of the school. As well as promoting academic quality and an enhanced student experience, he co-ordinated the development of the school’s academic portfolio, UK and international partnerships and income-generating activities.

A key feature of this role was to connect, develop and sustain relationships with educational institutions, business and industry networks. This was instrumental in the school being awarded Small Business Charter status from the Association of Business Schools.

During his time at Staffordshire University, Paul also served as the Head of Programmes and Portfolio, Programme Area Manager, and a Principal Lecturer specialising in Tourism Marketing.
He has extensive experience of front-line teaching across a range of undergraduate, postgraduate, professional and executive education level programmes both on-campus and as an overseas visiting lecturer.

Paul has chaired, co-ordinated or been a panel member on more than fifty school/university and external institution quality reviews and validation panels in universities and colleges across the UK and overseas in countries including China, Malaysia, Singapore, India, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Oman, and in many European countries.

Currently, he is an external examiner and mentor at Leeds Beckett University, and has previously undertaken external examining duties with a number of universities including: Salford, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, and Derby.

As Head of Professional Development for the Tourism Management Institute, Paul was responsible for engaging with practitioner members to establish their continuing professional development needs. He also revised the Institute’s higher education course recognition scheme to grow the number of accredited universities and colleges in response to the changing education and destination landscapes.

In 2016, Paul was a member of the Quality Assurance Agency’s working group convened to revise and update the QAA benchmark statements for Events, Hospitality, Leisure, Sport and Tourism higher education providers.

He was the Chartered Institute of Marketing’s Senior Examiner for many years where he was responsible for their Tourism Marketing Professional Diploma. He has also worked with leading global accreditation bodies such as Edexcel and City & Guilds on curriculum, skills, and apprenticeship development schemes.

Throughout his academic and professional career, Paul has engaged with business and external funding agencies in a consultancy capacity to ensure his research has a knowledge transfer and practical application focus. He was funded by the British Council to help develop curriculum and pedagogy aimed at embedding employability into postgraduate business programmes.

He has been a reviewer for a number academic journals and presented conference papers where his research work has been widely used to shape and inform key policy and strategy developments. He continues to work in a consultancy and advisory capacity with a number of organisations, as well as undertaking media interviews across a range of subject areas.

Paul is excited about working with the New Beacon Group as part of a new academic team to grow its academic portfolio, develop new partnerships and accreditations, and strengthen its research profile in line with its vision to become a recognised, globally-connected education institution.
